 Livestock Farm Internship

  Category Job Offer
Location Sperryville, VA, USA
Date posted 7:50:19 2006-3-18

The farm is 800 acres, of which 400 acres are forested, 230 are grazed, and the remaining is set aside for riparian restoration.

At Mount Vernon Farm we raise and direct market 100% grass-fed beef and lamb and pastured pork and eggs. While the farm is not certified organic, we strive to provide the best care for our livestock and soil and best product to our customers by never using antibiotics, synthetic growth hormones, or chemicals. We instead use homeopathic medicine to treat our animals when necessary. We practice low tech/low input farming, allowing our livestock to do the work of harvesting solar energy in the form of grass. We use management intensive grazing techniques -- rotationally grazing (moving livestock to fresh grass every day) to most efficiently capture our most available resource, grass. During the spring and summer we are grazing 150 head of cattle, 150 lambs, about 20 hogs and 50-200 hens.

Mount Vernon Farm is located in Sperryville, VA, in Rappahannock County. The view from the farm is breathtaking. Shennandoah National Park and Skyline Drive are both within 10 minutes drive from the farm. A river runs through the farm, which offers good fishing. There are rock climbing, hiking, and biking opportunities. Washington D.C. is 1.5 hours drive.

Mount Vernon Farm is managed by a 27 year old woman who grew up on a farm and has five years of rotational grazing experience. She and the farm owner are currently developing a plan to incorporate her into the operation as part owner of the business.

We have internship openings year 'round. Apply any time.
